Technical SEO sounds scarier than it is. Most of it is not black magic, it is just making sure your website works properly so Google does not choke on it. Think of it like MOT checks for your car. You would not drive a clapped-out Fiesta down the M8 without brakes, so why would you launch a site without checking crawlability? To be honest above all aspects I love technical SEO, the feeling of plugging away at every little issue and getting a perfect score on SEMrush does tickle me pink but seeing the traffic flowing in a few months later is the icing on the cake.

According to Moz, technical SEO issues are responsible for more than half of site ranking problems. The good news: most fixes are boring, simple, and effective. It takes a certain type of person to plug away for weeks to get everything just right but with Hot Igloo you have found those people.

Speed Matters More Than You Think

A slow site kills conversions. Google found that if a page takes longer than three seconds to load, more than half of users bounce. That means if your site drags, your customers are already gone.

Quick fixes:

  • Compress images (nobody needs a 5MB stock photo of a handshake).
  • Use caching.
  • Get decent hosting. The cheapest plan from a bargain-bin provider in Slough is not good enough.

I worked with a Highland hotel whose site took twelve seconds to load. In 24 hours we had got that time down to 1.2 seconds by simply using nitropack, 3 months later their retention was up over 40% and bookings via the website had doubled.  We have traveled the length and breadth of the Scottish Highlands and the internet speed of people looking for a hotel is very variable making page speed even more important than a city centre business.

Mobile First, Because Google Says So

Google indexes the mobile version of your site first. It’s been this way for years but for some reason there are even SEO agencies in Scotland that still don’t know this!

If it is broken on mobile, you are sunk. Always check your site on a phone, not just your fancy widescreen monitor.

Common sins:

  • Tiny buttons that require surgeon’s fingers.
  • Fonts smaller than a road sign seen through fog.
  • Pop-ups that cover the whole screen.

If a user cannot book a room, buy a product, or even read the text on their phone, you have lost them.

Crawlability and Indexing

Google has to crawl your site to rank it. If your robots.txt or noindex tags are wrong, you are invisible.

Steps to check:

  1. Run your site in Google Search Console.
  2. Look at the Coverage report for errors.
  3. Fix broken redirects, 404s, or accidental noindex tags.

I once audited a site in Edinburgh where the developer had accidentally noindexed the entire blog. Two years of content hidden from Google because of one line of code.

Site Structure and Navigation

Think of your site as a map. If a human cannot find their way, neither can Google.

Tips:

  • Keep URLs short and readable.
  • Use logical categories, not fifty random drop-downs.
  • Make cornerstone content easy to reach in two clicks.

A messy site structure is like a Tesco where all the bread is hidden behind ten aisles of dog food. Nobody sticks around long enough to find it.

HTTPS: Non-Negotiable

If your site is still on HTTP in 2025, you are basically hanging a sign saying “I don’t care about security.” Get an SSL certificate. It is cheap, it is easy, and Google uses it as a ranking factor.  As part of out standard yearly hosting package we offer a free SSL certificate.

Final Word

Technical SEO is not sexy, but it keeps your site alive. Fix speed, fix mobile, check crawlability, and make your site easy to use. Do those things and you are already ahead of most businesses.

At Hot Igloo, we have cleaned up technical SEO messes for everyone from Edinburgh law firms to Highland hotels. The result is always the same: faster sites, higher rankings, and more business.
