bullet pointWhy exchange links?

Link exchanges have long been an accepted method of increasing the page rank of your site and boosting your search engine ranking.

bullet pointHow links help your ranking

Think of search engines as a huge popularity contest. Every site out there which links to you counts as a "vote" for your site. So, in simple terms, the more "votes" you have the better.

It's not quite that simple, though...

bullet pointWho to exchange links with

Some "votes" (links) carry more weight than others. For example, if you're a UK website design business, like us, links from sites which contain content relevant to UK website design will be much more beneficial than links from sites which contain information about, say, dog grooming.

The content doesn't have to be the same as yours, just relevant to yours. For example, a UK website design company may want to exchange links with a UK copywriting service, hosting providers, graphic designers, Internet marketers and more.)

So, you need to be selective about who you exchange links with.

Another factor to bear in mind is page rank, which is a number between one and ten assigned to your site by Google. The higher your rank, the more important Google considers your website to be. (And if Google thinks your site is important, you're onto a good thing!)

Links from sites with a high page rank, then, are better for you than links from sites which have a low page rank, or none at all. Remember, though: sites with a low page rank can quickly grow into ones with a higher rank - we all have to start somewhere. So when you're considering who to exchange links with, don't immediately discount the lower ranking sites: instead, look at them carefully and try to establish whether the site is a high quality one. If it is, its page rank is likely to grow.
