Proofreading and Editing Service - Frequently Asked Questions

This section covers some of the questions we receive about our proofreading and editing service. Check out our main proofreading and editing page to find out more about our prices and how to use the service.

Q. What is proofreading and editing?
A. Some people find it difficult to differentiate between proofreading and editing, or to know which type of service they need. Here's a brief description of each:

Proofreading:

When we proofread your documents, we will check carefully for errors such as spelling, grammar and typos. We will then either correct these ourselves, providing you with a "changes tracked" document, in which you can view each change we've made, or, if you prefer, we can simply return your proofs to you with the corrections marked in red. Please note that if you ask us to proofread a document, we will only correct errors: we will not make substantial changes to the length, flow or sense of your writing.

Editing:

If you choose our editing service, in addition to checking for errors, we will also help you prepare your documents for publication by making changes as required to improve the quality of your writing. This could include re-writing some sentences or paragraphs, or rearranging the order of your document to improve the "flow." Our editors can help cut your work to meet a specific word count, check facts and make suggestions as to the consistency, style and tone of your work.

In brief, a proofreader will simply check for accuracy, while an editor will make changes as required to improve the quality of writing as a whole.

Q. What if I'm still not sure which service I need?
A. No problem: simply Send us your document for a free assessment

Q. How much does it cost?
A. For details on our pricing structure, see our main proofreading and editing page.

Q. How fast is your service?
A. We can generally offer a 24-hour turnaround on documents of up to 50 pages (double spaced in 12 point font). For longer documents, we will do our utmost to accommodate your deadline, and will contact you with an estimated completion time.

Q. What kind of training and experience do you have? A. Editorial director Amber McNaught has completed proofreading training with the Society for Proofreaders and Editors and has spent many years proofreading and editing for newspapers, magazines and other publications. All of our proofreading staff are similarly qualified, and we guarantee the highest possible standard of work.

Q. How do I get my document to you?
A. Most clients send their document for proofreading and editing by email, but you can also send us your work through the mail. See our contact section for details.

Q. How will I get it back?
A If you email us your work, we'll email it back to you. If you send it by mail, it will be returned in the same way. (Please note: if sending novel length manuscripts by mail, there will be a charge for return postage).
