So often news features are used for pointless information that a browser neither, looks at or cares about. You have to ask yourself how you can reverse that trend. People are so used to ignoring news articles that it's a tough ask.
Let us go through the steps to making your news useful.

Keywords, yes the old faithful, you NEED to get them into your articles.
Tie these word choices up with the keywords you have used in your meta tags and you are sure to pull more people to your site. The more relevant your text is, the more a search engine likes you!
Next is basic grammar: keep it tight and spell check, not just once or twice but three times! And don't just rely on MSWord as we all know it can get it wrong.
Avoid smilies and any sort of internet speak: if you don't know what they are then bonus you don't need to worry about this point!
Keep some sort of thread going between news articles so if you manage to get someone to read one of your articles then they may want to come back to see the conclusion.
Don't spend your time talking about boring site upgrades and back end changes, people don't care!
Use the space to advertise seasonal special offers.
